01
Reporting & Claims Process
Q: How soon after an accident do I need to report to ICBC?
A: It's recommended to call ICBC Dial-a-Claim within 24 hours of the accident — the sooner you report, the better it protects your rights.
Q: What if I lose my Claim Number?
A: You can call ICBC customer service directly and provide your personal details and the accident date — staff can help you look it up.
Q: Can I handle my own claim, or do I need a lawyer?
A: Many people handle straightforward cases on their own without any issue. But if there's serious injury, disputed liability, or a larger settlement involved, it's worth consulting a lawyer to protect your rights.
02
Medical & Counselling
Q: Is ICBC counselling really free?
A: Yes. Up to 12 sessions of clinical counselling within the first 12 weeks are fully paid by ICBC — you won't need to cover the cost yourself.
Q: Do I need a doctor's referral to see a counsellor?
A: Not within the first 12 weeks. If you need to extend beyond that, a referral letter from a doctor or therapist is generally required.
Q: Can I choose my own counsellor?
A: Yes. You can choose any ICBC-approved registered counsellor or therapist — it doesn't have to be one assigned by ICBC.
03
Compensation & Liability
Q: Who determines who's at fault?
A: ICBC's Claims Adjuster assesses liability based on scene evidence, the police report, and both parties' statements.
Q: Can I claim Accident Benefits with partial fault?
A: Yes. Accident Benefits don't require fault to be determined — regardless of liability, you're entitled to claim medical and income benefits.
Q: Roughly how long does it take for a settlement to be approved?
A: It depends on the complexity of the case — anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Keeping all your receipts and records helps speed up the process.
04
Other Common Questions
Q: It's been a while since my accident — can I still apply?
A: Trauma responses can be delayed. As long as your ICBC claim is still active, you can contact your Adjuster to find out how to apply.
Q: What if the other driver has no insurance?
A: ICBC offers Uninsured Motorist Protection (including hit-and-run situations), so you can still claim related compensation — be sure to mention this when you report the accident.
Q: My English isn't strong — can I communicate in Cantonese?
A: Yes. We offer service in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English — you can communicate in whichever language feels most comfortable throughout the entire process.
